Finding forever families for homeless pets
All homeless pets share one thing: They just want a family to call their own.
At least 150,000 pets enter shelters across Canada every year. Nearly a third wait months to be adopted.
Today, PetSmart Charities® of Canada’s goal is to end pet homelessness for good. Since 1999, we’ve helped more than 220,000 pets find forever homes.
Here’s how we do it
Adoption Centres. We work with almost 140 animal welfare groups throughout Canada. They provide cats and kittens that fill the Adoption Centres in more than 100 PetSmart® stores, showcasing healthy, adoptable cats in high foot-traffic areas. Potential adopters get to meet cats, and the centres help free up space at local shelters. Our animal welfare groups coordinate daily care of the cats, as well as veterinary care and vaccinations.
Adoption Support. Adoption events provide a fresh look at furry faces for folks who may not make the trip to an animal shelter. Homeless pets have a better chance of finding homes when more people get to meet them. Every weekend, you’ll find pets from local shelters available for adoption at PetSmart Charities of Canada–sponsored events like National Adoption Weekends, neighbourhood weekend adoption events and community-wide adoption fairs. Plus, PetSmart Charities of Canada provides grant funding to help organizations increase their capacity to save pets' lives through adoption.
Emergency Relief. Whether man-made or natural, when disaster strikes many pets are left homeless. PetSmart Charities of Canada works closely with animal welfare groups to support time-sensitive pet rescue efforts. Our emergency relief program has saved more than 3,000 lives since 2007 by delivering much-needed supplies to animal welfare groups saving pets from disasters.
Prevention. Spaying or neutering cats and dogs is the surest way to prevent unplanned litters. That’s why PetSmart Charities of Canada offers so many programs that make access to spay/neuter services easier and more affordable. We provide grants to spay/neuter clinics and animal welfare groups that help them to perform more surgeries and educate their communities.
What is success?
PetSmart Charities of Canada’s goal is to find a lifelong, loving home for every pet. We find homes for nearly 20,000 pets every year. But with hundreds of thousands of pets still in need of homes, we continue to find new ways to reduce the homeless pet population.
But the real measure of success shows in the heartwarming stories of people who have adopted through PetSmart Charities of Canada, and they know the love that pets bring to their families.
When you adopt, you save a pet’s life and enrich your own.
Our lifesaving work across Canada depends on donations from caring pet lovers like you.
