Pickering Students Raise $400 for PetSmart Charities of Canada

In November 2017, PetSmart Charities of Canada received a heart-warming donation from a group of very young children. As part of their activites and curriculum, students in an after school program at Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten in Pickering, Ontario were offered the opportunity make bracelets and sell them in support of a charity that was meaningful to them.

But which charity to choose? Together the children researched and voted on what charity they would support.  After some discussion and debate, they selected PetSmart Charities of Canada. “I wanted to support PetSmart Charities because we didn’t want to help just one kind of animal, we wanted to help all of the animals,” said Jahzara Daniels, 9.

The childrens' philanthropic efforts were met with a very enthusiastic response from parents in the Colwell Nursery School community, as well as relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours. So much so, that what started as a small project raised a very sizeable donation. “They voted on which charity they wanted to support and they’ve pretty much run the whole thing,” said Colwell Nursery School and Kindergarten Supervisor Stacey Freeland-Viarruel. "I'm really proud of what they've accomplished and how big their hearts are."

On November 16, representatives from from PetSmart Charities of Canada joined Kent Griffin, District Leader for the North East Toronto Region, Jason Smith, Store Leader from the Pickering PetSmart store,  Grooming Salon Leader Jamie Roberts along with PetSmart's mascot, Chance the Dog, at Colwell Nursery School for a cheque presentation event. The children presented PetSmart Charities of Canada with a $400 donation to help pets in need across the country

“We’re really thankful to Ms. Stacey and all of the children in Colwell's after school program for selecting us as their cause of choice,” said Carrie Trembinski, who works in public relations for PetSmart Charities of Canada “It’s very inspiring to see a young generation embracing the bond between people and pets and understanding how important philanthropy is to helping pets in need.”

To thank the students for their generous donation,  PetSmart and PetSmart Charities teams gifted a Chance, Lucky or Hope plush toy from the Holiday Philanthropic Collection to every child in the after school program class.  The stuffed toys brought smiles to the faces of these young philanthropists, who have surely changed the lives of several pets with their generous donation.
