Founded by PetSmart to Save Lives

Since 1999, we've found homes for 237,000 pets and donated more than $12 million to help pets in need.

PetSmart associate pets newly adopted dog.Jim and Janice Dougherty, the founders of PetSmart®, wanted to help solve the problem of pet homelessness. In the early 1990s, they made the radical decision to never sell cats or dogs in their stores.

Instead, they created PetSmart Charities™ as a nonprofit animal welfare organization. Soon after expanding into Canada, PetSmart founded the nonprofit’s sister organization, PetSmart Charities™ of Canada, in 1999.

People often think PetSmart Charities of Canada is largely funded by the corporation, and while PetSmart is a valued partner of our organization, the main source of funding for our work comes from caring animal lovers and pet parents just like you, who choose to donate a dollar or more when they pay for purchases at PetSmart stores. If you donate at the check-out registers when shopping at PetSmart, you are helping us save pets’ lives.  And you'll be happy to know that we efficiently use 89 cents of every dollar donated to support the work of animal welfare organizations from coast to coast in Canada.

You donations help to support adoption events that find pets forever homes, the help make spay and neuter services more accessible and affordable, they fund animal therapy and service dog programs that enhance people's quality of life through pets, and they help us to spring in to action to help pets and pet parents affected by natural and manmade disasters.

Thank you for your support of PetSmart Charities of Canada.  We promise to be excellent stewards of your donations.

Our lifesaving work across Canada depends on donations from caring pet lovers like you.
